• We covered Runescape Mobile back at GDC and it seems development is on track as Jagex has sent out the first 5,000 beta invites for Old School Runescape. If you’re unfamiliar with the whole confusing structure of Runescape and what’s coming, I’ll explain. Runescape itself is a formerly browser-based MMORPG. It has all the elements you would expect from an MMO but has a heavy focus on skills, from combat skills to crafting, fishing, and even woodcutting. There is also a very intricate economy, puzzle-like quests, PvP, and all of the other elements in a traditional MMORPG.

Runescape currently has 2 versions of the game. Runescape is the current modern version of the game running on the shiny MTX engine with upgraded graphics, combat systems, and skills. It is the most modern version of the game to date and has come a long way from the days of yore when Runescape was exclusively browser-based. Prepare rule the RS world? Jagex released Old-School Runescape, also known as 2007scape, in 2013 after much community backlash over so many changes to the core game. Complaints ranged from graphics, combats systems, and new skills that players argued had fundamentally changed the game to a point that it wasn’t the same game they had come to know and love.

Old-School Runescape aimed to fix those issues by featuring an almost unchanged game from the 2007 version. All of the core features and gameplay is exactly as it was in 2007 but the game also receives new content updates to keep things fresh while still staying true to the original roots of the game. All updates are entirely community driven with any update requiring 75% of the community vote.

Runescape also receives regular content updates but without the concern of straying too far from the original mechanics. It’s hard to believe it’s been 15 years now that Runescape has been around and if you haven’t played the game in a while, a lot has changed, but clearly, Jagex has also made sure that much has also stayed the same.

Old-School Runescape is the version coming to mobile first. Runescape is also coming to mobile but only after Old-School Runescape has launched. In our coverage of RunescapeMobile back at GDC, our own Eli and Jared had a chance to actually see the game in action.

Now Jagex has officially rolled out the first 5,000 beta invites to players and the Beta is underway. Jagex has made no statement of official release plans other than 2018, but a mobile version has been discussed for so long now that I wouldn’t put too much stock in any dates or timelines at this point but with how complete the game seems to be at this point, 2018 seems very reasonable for Old-School Runescape Mobile.

If you’re at all interested in Runescape, now is a great time to jump in if you never have before. You can still sign up at the site if you’re interested in the Beta. Personally, as a long-time player of Runescape, I’m super excited for a mobile version. You can expect full coverage of Runescape Mobile as more details become available.

I’m trying to work, Dave! Can’t you see I’ve got a news post to…

You can’t just… Yes of course I know about Zamorak!

Give that back! Give it back right now! Give me th...

Hey! Adventurer! It’s me, Evil Dave!

Crazy news - turns out ZAMORAK is back in town (who knew, right!?), and I need YOUR help to conduct the RITUAL OF ULTIMATE DOOMLY EVIL to make him notice me.

You’ll find me at the Basement of DOOM - beneath my mother’s house in Edgeville. I’ll explain the whole thing there. You’ll need to have done my section of RECIPE FOR DISASTER and be a member with at least level 30 in herblore, magic, agility and cooking. Oh, and you’ll need to be EVIL!

Mod Scorpio’s giving me an EVIIIL look, so I’d better relinquish my dominion of the KEYBOARD OF CHAOS.

Get your runescape 2007 gold and see you in-game!

    Patch NotesRibbon Rework

Mod Hunter’s made a number of handy tweaks to the ribbon. What a legend.

    • The window can now be resized and now adds space between icons

    • The following windows can now be added to the ribbon: magic abilities, combat spells, teleport spells, skilling spells, attack abilities, strength abilities, defence abilities, constitution abilities and emotes. This is now easier for us to do, should we need to add more.

    • The following features have been added to the ‘Ribbon Setup’ interface:

    1. You can now reset your ribbon to the default icons or clear it in one go

    2. Icons added to the bar are now removed from the selection area

    • Spacing has been improved for the ‘Ribbon Setup’ interface and the Options Menu. A section for window management has also been added to the latter.

    • Of the two windows labelled ‘Magic Abilities’, the main has been renamed ‘Magic Book’ and been given an icon to match.

    • Melee and attack abilities now have separate icons (melee uses crossed swords).

    • The ‘worn equipment’ icon has been changed to distinguish it from the ‘hero’ icon.

    • The drawer icon has been replaced with a settings cog to make room.

    ...Thanks Mod Hunter!

To ensure that these changes have had the desired effect, they will now be tested for new players, half of whom will see the existing, unchanged setup while the other half are exposed to the above.

You can read the full list of this week’s updates - including optimisations resulting from some fancy new dev tools - on the patch notes forum thread.

    MWAHAHAHA!

    Evil is the BEST!

    Evil Dave
